Vanilla is synonymous with sweetness, warmth, and desire— but also with Western colonialism and industrial innovation. In the perfumer’s palette, it is perhaps the most universally beloved raw material, with a long history stretching from its origins in Mexico to 19th-century Germany via Madagascar.
In this lecture, you’ll learn all about the history of vanilla, as well as how it is cultivated and used in the perfume industry. In collaboration with the world-leading raw material producers Laboratoire Monique Rémy and IFF, we’ll smell both the raw material and isolated fragrance molecules, alongside contemporary perfumes from Nordiska Kompaniet.
