The King of Eau de Cologne

  • Kungliga slottet Stockholm, Stockholms län, 107 70 Sweden (map)

Please note that this lecture is given in Swedish

Karl XIV Johan is known as Napoleon's Field Marshal and Sweden's first Bernadotte King – but few know about his passion for Eau de Cologne, the perfume that became popular in Europe in the 18th century.

During an evening at the Royal Palace, I will talk about the miraculous water from Cologne and its prominent role in Karl Johan's court culture. You will gain insight into how royal representation was not only about visible symbols such as clothes and regalia, but also about subtle sensory impressions that reinforced the image of power and elegance.

Throughout the evening, I will demonstrate various raw materials, period examples of Eau de Cologne and a historical reconstruction of Napoleon's own cologne. Which you will get to smell!
